Qualcomm has unveiled a new chipset for the next generation of flagship phones. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 replaces the Snapdragon 888 and has significant improvements such as a new Image Signal Processor (ISP). Here’s how it stacks up against its forerunner.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is the company’s first 4nm mobile CPU, as well as the first to employ a new naming scheme. The San Diego-based semiconductor company’s long-standing triple-digit nomenclature for mobile platforms is being phased out in favour of a new one.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s initial improvement is its lower node size. A feature comparable to the iPhone 13’s Cinematic mode , which adds a bokeh effect to films, should be available on Android phones powered by the new Qualcomm processor (portrait mode for videos). However, unlike the iPhone 13 series , which can only record at 1080p in this mode, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can capture at up to 4K.

Connectivity 

The new flagship processor also has a new 5G modem with greater download rates (up to 10 Gbps peak download speed compared to 7.5 Gbps for the SD 888). However, the majority of people are on networks with download speeds of less than half that, or in areas where 5G is not available at all. As a result, there’s not much to get excited about in terms of the new modem’s speed. However, according to Qualcomm 5G PowerSave 2.0, which utilises a greater power efficiency-enhancing method than the Snapdragon 888, consumers should see an improvement in battery life when using 5G networks.
