1. Find Backlink Opportunities with Top Referral Sources

You can start by looking at the top referral sources of your website. These are websites that are linking to your content and offering you a backlink.

By finding out which type of websites link back to your site and the type of content they prefer, you can find new opportunities and create similar content to get a backlink.

There are many ways you can view your referral sources. In Google’s Universal Analytics, head to Acquisition » All Traffic » Referrals. In Google Analytics 4, go to Acquisition » User acquisition.

The easiest way to find your referral traffic, though, is through MonsterInsights. It’s the best WordPress plugin for Google Analytics and presents different reports inside your WordPress dashboard.

To view your top referral sources, go to Insights » Reports. The first report you’ll see will be of Overview. Scroll down and view the Top 10 Referral sources.

HARO is like Tinder for public relations.

It connects people that need sources (bloggers and journalists) to people that want links and exposure (you).

And I’ve personally used HARO to build white hat backlinks from authoritative news sites:

To be clear: this strategy takes work. And it’s not always easy.

But in my experience, it’s one of the best ways to build high-quality backlinks at scale.

With that, let’s dive into the step-by-step process.

First, register as a source.

Next, choose a free or paid plan.

Then, keep an eye out for requests that you can contribute to.

Finally, send the journalist a VERY brief and valuable pitch.

Here’s a simple way to do that. Type the topic of the keyword you’re looking to target into Ubersuggest and click “Search.”

  • Click on these titles to browse the articles, looking for:
  • How many images does the blog post have?
  • What is the word count of the blog post?
  • What is the title?
  • the featured image?
  • What is the title tag and meta description?

Follow up with these tactics in your article:

  • Include higher quality images than any of the competition.
  • Have a higher word count on your blog post—or at least make every word matter.
  • Write a more compelling title.
  • Use an interesting featured image.
  • Write a title tag and meta description that is more focused. (see example)
  • Essentially, your goal is to analyze the competition, then do everything better.

6. Keep the Content Detailed and Deep

We talk a lot about long-form content, but comprehensive content might be even more important.

You can have a 6,000-word article that’s trash or a 1,000-word article that hits it out of the park.

The sweet spot is somewhere in the middle. If you write long content, it will naturally have to be detailed. Longer content gets more links and usually has higher SERP rankings.

So, to use the broken-link method, first find relevant websites in your niche that have resources pages. Find them by using these search queries in Google:

For example, if I have a parenting website, I’ll search for parenting + links.

To easily find broken links on those pages, download and install the Google Chrome plugin called Check my Links. Using this plugin, I quickly discovered all 404 links from this page:
Now, back to that webmaster: When reaching out, be friendly and introduce yourself. Tell this individual that he or she is linking to some resources that are no longer available. Always provide the exact location of the broken links, so they can be easily found. Give some alternatives to replace those links, including your own website. Try to be helpful, not greedy to get a backlink. Often, this method will work, but there will be cases when the webmaster will refuse to link back to you.

Guest blogging is the most effective way to reach new audiences. By publishing articles on other popular websites, you’ll get your content in front of new readers and win more exposure. Sometimes, it’s not just about the backlink, but about increasing your online reputation or your social media followers.

Guest blogging helps you leverage your relationships and expand your audience. In case you have doubts about guest posting, consider that even Google accepts guest contributors on its Google Analytics blog.

Numerous ways exist to find websites that accept guest articles. Here are three::

You have to spy on your competitors on social media and look for their link-building or earning techniques, as well as their content-marketing methods. Here are some tips:

Subscribe to their email newsletters or follow them on social media. My favorite tool to spy on my competitors’ backlinks is called Monitor Backlinks. It allows you to add your four most important competitors. From then on, you get a weekly report containing all the new links they have earned. Inside the tool, you get more insights about these links and can sort them by their value and other SEO metrics. A useful feature is that all the links my own website already has are highlighted in green, as in the screenshot below.

11. Build internal links.

Internal links are a key factor for running a successful blog. They are passing link juice, and you can use your anchor texts. With a good internal linking structure, you can help users easily navigate through your website and increase the overall user experience.

There are tools that can automatically create internal links on your blog, especially if you are running WordPress, but you should do this manually. Microsoft’s Matt Cutts has recommended that webmasters keep their number of internal links per page below 100, for both usability and SEO.

Great content won’t get you backlinks unless you know how to promote it right. You have to get out in the world and do email outreach to promote your best articles.

One of the best strategies to do this is to contact bloggers or websites running weekly or monthly roundups. Again, you can use Google and search for queries like “keyword + roundup.” Make sure you choose, in order to see results only from the past week or month.
Then contact the webmasters and give them a quick introduction to your website. With your message, send a link to one of your best tutorials or guides. If they find your resource useful, they may link back to you in their next weekly roundup. These bloggers are constantly looking for great content, so they definitely want to hear from you.

As with the other techniques, make sure you do not abuse your relationship with any webmaster by asking for a link directly.

13. Get Contextual Links

Have you noticed how some articles feature additional resources, either recommended in text or inside a “Read more” section?

Here’s an example of a “read more” section from SEJ, where they link to a related piece:

The key to getting contextual links is to find the right link prospect to reach out to. You can find them by researching articles that are related to the content you’re promoting and already have a “Read more” section.

For instance, let’s say you have a new study on email marketing. Try looking for articles that speak about marketing trends and recommend other articles.

Here’s how to find them using search engines like Google:

When you reach out to the author to pitch your study, don’t forget to mention why your content is worth getting featured. A persuasive boilerplate and a personalized email will go a long way.

Additionally, Theard says: “Once you get into the habit of earning backlinks, you may start to notice that other publishers come to you directly. With the right relationship-building strategy, publishers come to you rather than you inquiring to them.”

She adds, “Relationship-based backlinks are critical, as opposed to simple (and frequent) link exchanges. Google can, and will, pick up on backlink publications that are whimsy; a backlink for a backlink is not a good backlink. A relationship-based backlink is accepted by Google through relevant keywords, the credibility of websites, and genuine effort to have website referrals be at the top of calibers.”

An Ultimate Guide is a piece of content designed to be the best, most comprehensive resource on a given topic. It covers enough information that you don’t need to go elsewhere to learn more about that subject.

For instance, if someone writes an article titled “How to get started with SEO“, they can focus on a few tips and tactics without explaining, in-depth, what SEO is — instead, they can simply link to an SEO Ultimate Guide, if their readers have further questions.

15. Building Infographics

Infographic data is quite a popular format for sharing information. By building your own, you could have it shared among many websites from a single post.

Sites like AmazingInfoGraphics.com can help by giving you a platform to post these. You could also contact site owners and offer your image as a guest post, which many of them may agree to.

Additionally, posting one of these images onto your site could get exposure on Google Images as well.

To make it easier for you to pick the right tool for your next project, I went ahead and tested each tool to see how many backlinks they can find, as well as other unique features they each offer.

Ahrefs Backlink Checker

With the second most active crawler besides Google, Ahrefs has the most comprehensive backlink database, giving you up-to-date data. In the free version of the tool, Ahrefs shows you Top 100 backlinks, Top 5 anchors, and Top 5 pages. That’s enough to get a birds-eye view of your website’s backlinks.

If you’d like to get into more details, the paid version offers far more extensive data and access to other tools that might be useful in a link-building campaign, like Content Explorer or Broken Outbound links, to name a few.

Backlinks by Neil Patel


It may not pick up as many backlinks or referring domains as Ahrefs, but this tool gives a lot of value in the free version. For one, you can export to CSV up to 5,000 backlinks and see the Source Page Title, URL, and anchor text. You can also filter the view by including or excluding domains, anchors, or zones (.es, .de, etc.). All in all, I’d definitely recommend checking out this free tool.

MonitorBacklinks


MonitorBacklinks picks up almost as many referring domains as Ahrefs. Additionally, what’s unique about MonitorBacklinks is that it offers details on the top backlinks that you can see based on Trust Flow or Citation Flow. However, to access more of their database, you need to switch to their paid version.

OpenLinkProfiler


OpenLinkProfiler is a great tool for analyzing your backlink profile. The downside is that their database of links is fairly limited compared to Ahrefs or MonitorBacklinks. Still, there’s a lot of insights you can gain (for free) by filtering the available backlinks by categories such as industry, TLDs, anchors, or LIS (Link Influence Score). That’s something I haven’t seen in other free tools.

This tool also provides charts to show you which pages get the most links, or which countries link most to your website.

RankWatch

RankWatch has a great Dashboard feature where you can visualize your backlink profile. Among other things, you can see your link acquisition trend for the past three months, referring domains acquisition, and anchor distribution. The overall summary charts are available for free. However, if you want to see the exact list of backlinks or referring domains you’ve earned, you need to switch to the paid version.

CognitiveSEO

CognitiveSEO is great for getting an overall view of the total backlinks and referring domains — and, most importantly, checking your link velocity. You can see the link acquisition trend for the past 6 months for free, even without creating an account. Another interesting visual report is the Top 5 website pages, where you can see how your website performs by backlinks or referral domains.

All of the above tools provide valuable insights that can help you get started with link building. They all give a macro view on your backlink profile, but each one comes with different additional information. Try them out and see which one is best for you.
